CED Digest Vol. 2 No. 47 • 11/22/1997 |
From: "Zach D." To: Tom Howe <ceds@teleport.com> Date: Sun, 16 Nov 1997 01:33:52 -0500 Subject: Digest Entry Just some more food for thought on the "Bring back the CED!" project. Does anyone know just WHERE the CED pressing devices might be located? I remember a few years ago on the classic video game group... some guy had a great idea that all the classic gamers make a pilgrimage to New Mexico (Or was it Arizona) and there they would do an archaeological dig for a ton of overproduced atari 2600 games (ET, Swordquest Earthworld) for fun and for souvenirs. So, all these elaborate plans were made on how and when everyone would bring their pup tents and there pick axes to the site for the dig. Only problem, no one could figure out just WHERE the location was. So it was about 6 months of wishful thinking. Does anyone know where it might be? If it existed? Is there only one machine? Or what? Also, on another note from a skeptic... I think the number given as the number of people still using CED's... is overstated. Even if it was not.. I don't think people who aren't on the internet should be counted! How are they to contribute anything if they don't know? I would guestimate the number of people who are CED users and are on the internet at what... 100? 200? Maybe less than either of those? I'm not against this whole deal, I think it'd be swell.. but, I say cut through some feasibility discussion and have someone do the leg work and find out where the pressing machine might be if it still exists. Because, if there is no machine.. what's to do.. make another? Not likely.. it probably takes a huge obsolete machine just to build the huge obsolete machine that is used to press the obsolete disks that we like so much. Cayea" To: <ceds@teleport.com> Subject: The CED Future, Part Ten Date: Sun, 16 Nov 1997 13:58:46 -0500 The CED Future: Part Ten Forming of a Corporation In the last few digests it has been pointed out, about the feasibilty of restarting our old, obsolete, but great system. After extensive research it has been found that publishing current films would be outside a realistic grasp. I do however believe, as well as other who believe, that it is realistic and possible to restart the manufacture of diamond stylus needles for our players. Recently I asked those who would interested to form into corporation with me so that we could pool resources and start this project. I recieved little response and I do thank those who did respond. I was asked that amung those who would participate in such a corporation, who would manage the money. It would be necessary to decide amungs ourselves to nominate a person who would let be known their capabilities of forming a corporation. In this there were also some questions that were asked and I would like to answer them now. What would the name of the company or corporation be? This hasn't been finalized and won't be until it is absolutely sure that 1.8 million dollars can be secured for the starting of the project. Who would manage the money? Either an accounting firm selected by the head of the corporation, or the corporation would mange the finances. Who would run the corporation? Amung us who would join into corporation, we must decide amungst ourselves who would be best certified to fulfill the position of CEO. If there are any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Cayea" To: <ceds@teleport.com> Subject: Searching for CED Discs' Date: Sun, 16 Nov 1997 14:17:57 -0500 Dear Fellow CED Users: My company is in search of the following titles for donation or possible purchase to be integrated with the National Capacitance Disc Library. James Bond Titles Star Wars Titles Police Academy Titles Star Trek Titles Thanks Dan Cayea ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: "Daniel P. Cayea" To: <ceds@teleport.com> Subject: The CED Future: Part Eleven Date: Sun, 16 Nov 1997 16:45:16 -0500 The CED Future: Part Eleven (V1.0) National Capacitance Disc Library & Corporation Notes I have written to you for ten previous times now asking for support and those who have offered I am grateful for your help and hope you stay tuned with my articles on Tom Howe's CED Digest to stay informed. I have started a library through my company Telecom Technologies, and as the header might indicate it is called the National Capacitance Disc Library. The mission of this library is to accumulate several copies of every title released in the CED Format for loan by any person with a CED Player. This library is not a non-profit organization. There would be a charge for loaning discs, which would be a relatively small fee. This small fee would cover inventory, shipping, and maintenance costs of the library. If anyone can make a donation either discs or players to the library, it would be appreciated. On the same note I would like to thank Bill Blasjkowicz and others who made donations to the library. If you would like to loan a film from the library send your request to cayead@westelcom.com with the name of the film and publisher (RCA or CBS). I will respond to your request whether or not we have it available and what the fee will be. Onto another tune dealing with the corporation of CED users. I suggest a name 'Capacitance Corporation'. It has come to my understanding that no company uses this name and it is somewhat catchy. Those who were interested in joining into corporation, please email me, so I can email with you the proper informaiton. -Dan Cayea -Telecom Technologies & Capacitance Corporation ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: "George Butts" To: <ceds@teleport.com> Subject: New CED releases Date: Sun, 16 Nov 1997 16:34:47 -0800 I have been reading the different opinions about the feasibility of bringing back the CED format. I work in the television industry and I would agree that I can't imagine that there would be any movie companies that would even consider allowing their films to be released on the CED format. It just wouldn't be cost effective for them. I think talking about releasing new films on CED is alike to longing for audio recording to be released on 8-track. I love both of the formats, but the charm of them is that they are obsolete and so many people consider them junk. That's why it's so fun when you find a nice stash of CED's in a thrift store that hundreds of people have probably walked by and asked, "What the heck are those?" The fact that people are donating these to thrift stores says something about their value to the general public. They are one step away from just being tossed in the garbage can. I do, however, think that forming a company to manufacture new parts for the existing players would be a feasible idea. A small electronics manufacturing company might be very interested in taking on this project for a sales potential of a couple hundred thousand units. I think that's where the efforts should be concentrated, not in bringing back movies on CED. Does anyone out there really want to pay from $25 to $35 for a movie released on CED? They were $25 when the format was alive. My guess is that if they were ever to be released again they'd be considerably more today. To me, it's much more satisfying to find some original films in near mint condition for 98 cents each! I just picked up 40 movies from Goodwill that are obviously from a private collection because they look and play superbly. 98 cents apiece! That's what collecting CED's is all about. The thrill of the hunt. When you decide to start a company to manufacture parts sign me up. I'll gladly pay my $10. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Nov 1997 09:59:00 -0700 To: Tom Howe <ceds@teleport.com> From: "Marlin Bates, IV" Subject: Elephant Parts CED and more for sale I have the following for sale. Part of the appeal of my CED collection is that there are literally thousands of hours of material that I have never seen; one of the biggest allures of the format is not being able to see the disc too (just like under normal use you would never see the spool of tape inside an 8-track.) I like to be surprised when I pick out a movie I haven't watched yet and know nothing of what it's about. However, I just ran into a disaster. Going through some of my old VHS tapes recorded off TV, back when I was so poor I had only one VCR and had to tape movies off independent TV stations, I was watching some of the commercials with my closed-captions turned on and a promo for a showing of "Hard Country" came on. What was funny was that the master they were using was captioned, so whatever captions were present in the clips they were showing showed up on the screen. This station always used movies in their original format, unedited (complete with bad language and stuff until they got a ton of complaints; they're now a Fox affiliate) and I'd never seen captions on any of these; so I got out my CED of "Hard Country", which I'd been meaning to watch anyway since it looked like an interesting movie, and it turned out to be disc 2 of "Never Say Never Again!" This was the first time I had gotten the wrong movie when trying to watch one; the only other time was when I had 2 copies of "Arthur" and one of them turned out to have "Game of Death" inside. I have no other copies of Hard Country though so I'll just have to keep an eye out for another copy. Does anyone else do what I do and just await surprises, or do you check the disc right away to at least make sure it's the right one? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: "Daniel P. Cayea" To: <ceds@teleport.com> Subject: National Capacitance Disc Library Date: Fri, 21 Nov 1997 20:55:09 -0500 Dear Fellow CED'ers: As part of my company project to enhance and re-enact the CED format as much as possible, I have started the National Capacitance Disc Library, a profit organization that I have developed to build it's CED resources to great extents for access by all those with CED Players and Interest. Currently the NCD Library is small and few resources but plans are in the making to reverse this. There are however some catches about people loaning materials from the library.
